This year the city of Milan is paying tribute to the historic car maker, the Alfa Romeo. 100 years ago this week, Italian automaker Alfa Romeo was first established, opening the doors as Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobilie, or ALFA.
Several events are being staged over four days commencing from 24 to 27 June.
The event is memorialized by the unveiling ceremony of a bronze sculpture donated by the Registro Italiano Alfa Romeo or 'RIAR'. Inspired by the famous Alfa Romeo 1900 Disco Volante (Flying Saucer), the work was designed by the Centro Stile Alfa Romeo with the collaboration of artist Agostino Bonalumi. The 'RIAR' is responsible for conglomerating more than 1500 vintage Alfa owners, and numerous fans of the brand from around the globe.
The event will be highlighted by the huge international rally dedicated to all Alfa Romeo enthusiasts. Thousands of crews will be parading through the centre of Milan. Final destination: the Sforzesco Castle, where the most significant models of the brand's one-hundred year history will take to the catwalk.
There are copiousness of milestones for this ancestral brand, but maybe nothing more important than the Pininfarina-built 1966 Alfa Romeo Spider fitted with a four-cylinder twin-cam 1570cc engine which delivers 109 horsepower (81 kW). Nicknamed both "Duetto", and "Osso di Seppia" (or "Cuttlefish bone"), the car was cancelled because of its small sales from 1991 to 1993.
The Giulietta Sprint was introduced in 1954 and is claimed to be the first mass-produced automobile with an aluminum identical twin overhead cam engine. Its 1.3-liter inline-four engine delivers from 53 to 116 horsepower (40 to 87 kW).
Other milestones include the Alfa 24 HP, a 1950 Alfa Romeo 1900, the 1900 Disco Volante and a Alfa 158.
These events are taking place at the City Council, Fiera Milano Expo, the Monza Race Track and the Alfa Romeo Museum.
