Audi V8-powered R8 Spyder announced

Audi is adding another model to its R8 high-performance sports car lineup. The carmaker has officially announced that the new R8 Spyder will also be offered with the same V-8 powerplant seen in the original R8, itself being the 4.2-liter V-8 from the retired RS4. The R8 Spyder 4.2 is available with a six-speed manual in addition to the R-Tronic semi-automatic gearbox.

The Audi R8 Spyder 4.2 FSI quattro comes standard with a manual six-speed transmission and works together with a compact dual-disc clutch.

In the coupe the V-8 produces 420 horsepower, although the R8 Spyder 4.2 FSI V-8 is expected to have a little bit more grunt with 430 horsepower to help move the extra weight. The car is able to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in around 4.8 seconds, while reaching a top speed of 299 km/h (185.79 mph).

The R8 Spyder 4.2 FSI quattro has a lightweight cloth top with a fully automatic drive. Its body is an aluminum Audi Space Frame with large-area components of carbon fiber composite material.

Audi offers the R8 Spyder 4.2 FSI quattro with a choice of three colors for the top: black, red and brown. The body is available in the solid finishes Ibis White and Brilliant Red; the metallic finishes Suzuka Gray, Teak Brown, Ice Silver, Jet Blue and Aurum Beige; and the pearl effect finishes Daytona Gray, Sepang Blue, Lava Gray and Phantom Black. The windshield frame is coated with anodized aluminum.

In the European market it will go on sale for 121,000 euros and hit European dealers in the third quarter of this year. Audi has yet to confirm if the R8 Spyder 4.2 FSI V-8 will make it to U.S. shores. If it does make it to the U.S., expect it to cost around $150,000 and to go on sale at the end of the year.
