It appears the 911 Speedster may make a return, as claimed by reports coming out of Europe.
According to a leaked document detailing Porsche's product plans until the end of 2012, the 911 Speedster will be a limited edition. Only 100 units will be produced towards the end of the year, about 800 less than the production run of the original 1989 911 Speedster.
The Speedster is essentially a chopped convertible with an oversized rear hump, which gives the Speedster its signature shape, leading into a streamlined tail. The latest model based on the 911 will follow this same design route but it's expected to also feature a wider body. Like last year's 2011 Porsche Boxster Spyder, the new 911 Speedster will feature a removable fabric roof in case that the weather gets bad.
Power will come from the same 3.8-liter flat six engine from the 911 Sport Classic, which will deliver 402 horsepower, an extra 17 horsepower over the mill found in the 911 Sport Classic, and 310 pound-feet of torque. The car should be able to accelerate from 0-62 mph in around 4.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 190 mph. Rear-wheel drive and a limited-slip differential will ensure traditional Porsche handling.
The Speedster is likely to nudge 200,000 pounds ($300,000) when it goes on sale later this year.
Porsche comes with another surprise for us. The carmaker is also expected to launch a wide-bodied GTS version of the 911 which is planned to go on sale next year. It will be powered by the same 402 horsepower 3.8-liter engine seen on Speedster and will come in both coupe and cabriolet variants costing around 80,000 pounds and 90,000 pounds respectively.
