Spotted: the first photo of the 2012 Peugeot 309

The successor to the current Peugeot 308 hatchback was caught on camera, but unfortunately only a single image is available.

This photo likely comes from a French car magazine and presents the upcoming model, named the Peugeot 309. The 309 is the third model of the 14 new cars that the Lion brand plans to deliver in the next five years.

This 309 model appears to be an early-stage mock-up prototype and this photo of it likely comes from a French car magazine.

Of course, it's too early to figure out if the final product will look like this, especially because the design development is likely still being overseen by Peugeot design chief Gilles Vidal.

The 309 keeps the overall shape of the 308, but borrows the new face from the SR1 Concept, seen at Geneva Motor Show, in March.

What makes the difference between the 309 model and the model it replaces is the jutting front bumper, with LED running lights, along with the bonnet which features deep grooves and subtle creases in the doors, in order to give the 309 a fleshier look. The sleeker cat's eyes of the headlights and the tighter-looking mouth of the front grill make the 309 to stand out.

At the rear, although we can't figure out only from this single shot from the front, the hatch seems more economically flat in contrast to the larger bulges at the ends where the taillights are fitted which appear similar to the current 308.

The company also claims that it will focus on improving the economy and the emissions, besides freshen up the look.

A Peugeot spokesman confirmed that the new 309 won't hit the dealer showrooms until 2013.
