Shanghai VW general manager dies during test drive

The general manager of one of Volkswagen's joint ventures in China has been killed in a car accident. This happened at about 4 p.m. on Saturday during a business trip to Jiuquan City in northwest China's Gansu Province.

Liu Jian died in a road accident on a provincial highway in Guazhou County, Jiuquan. Three other people died in the accident Zeng Jialin, the JV's public relations director, the driver, and an after-sales manager.

Media reports said that Shanghai VW was holding a meeting in Jiuquan for the Volkswagen brand dealers and general manager Liu Jian and other three people of the company went to attend the meeting and test drive.

The accident was caused by a head-on collision between the VW Tiguan SUV the four people were in and a heavy dump truck from a construction site. The collision sparked a fire, killing the four at the scene, according to Gansu's public security bureau.

Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive Co. said it has set up an emergency team to coordinate with the police investigation into the accident.

Liu Jian, age 46, entered Shanghai VW in 1986 when he graduated from Shanghai Tongji University. He became general manager of the joint venture in October 2007, after he previously worked at units of Delphi Corp and ArvinMeritor Inc. in Shanghai.

The company said it is operating normally and the accident will not affect client service.
