2012 Mercedes SLK Electrochromic Roof

Magic Sky Control is the name of the first thing Mercedes shares about the 2010 Mercedes SLK. That is, the optional electrochromic roof it features, whose transparency can quickly be adjusted by the touch of a button. The roof becomes dark by default while the vehicle is switched off.

The basis for the operating principle is the physics of a plate condenser: the particles in the structure are positioned randomly by default but if the voltage is switched on, the particles position themselves so that light is able to pass through the glass.

The roof blocks UV and infrared light in transparent mode, thus keeping the temperature of the interior cooler by even 10 degrees Celsius. Another interesting caracteristic of Magic Sky Control is that it helps reduce the vehicle's CO2 emissions, due to the economy caused concerning the air-conditioning.
