Toyota Prius 10-year Anniversary

The Japanese car company Toyota has not one, but two reasons to celebrate this month, and both of them involve the Prius model.

After launching it in 1997 and introducing it in Europe, North America and other markets in 2000, Toyota has been the company with the best-selling hybrid vehicle ever produced. Prius has been sold at an annual rate of 400000 units worldwide, last month reaching and shattering the two-million mark of worldwide sales, thus being the most widely distributed gas-electric model nearly everywhere.

The second reason of celebration for Toyota Prius is reaching its 10th year of sales on 10.10.2010.

With its name derived from the Latin "to go before", Prius wants to be a step forward in innovation. The third-generation Prius employs the Toyota Hybrid System II (THS II) has a motor speed reduction device boasting a fuel efficiency of 38 km/L3. It also features a solar powered ventilation system and four selectable driving modes.

Prius has been the main channel of promoting Toyota's hybrid technology, as part of its environment-management policies.
