The new electric Mazda 2

The Japanese car manufacturer has announced recently the development of a new electric vehicle based on the technical platform of the latest Demio/Mazda 2 vehicle.
The electric car will have a range of up to 200 km and when launched in the spring of 2012, will be aimed primarily at governments and fleet owners.
Even so, the retail customers will be able to drive such a car but that will be only under the form of a lease and the EV won't be available in showrooms.
It seems that the Japanese car manufacturer has opted for the Mazda 2 as vehicle of choice for implementing its electric drive system because of the qualities that made this Japanese car, one of the most awarded vehicles in history, the Demio having no less than 48 prizes won since it's launch in 2007.
It's important to remember also the fact that the electric version of the Demio will look the same as the normal one but it will have one or more electric engines coupled directly to the wheels.
According to Mazda officials one of the primary objectives of this project is to gather feedback and to learn more about the long use requirements of an electric vehicle but also about the consumer acceptance of electric drive technology.
