NHTSA investigates wheel stud fractures in 2010 Ford Fusion

After receiving four different complaints concerning alleged wheel stud fractures on certain 2010 Ford Fusion, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has decided to start a preliminary investigation concerning a possible safety threat.
Three of the four Ford Fusion's that reportedly suffered the claimed defect are part of a greater 22 vehicle fleet and they each had its own driver who experienced similar incidents in different occasions.
All four cars reported to have suffered wheel stud fractures had between 5 and 11.000 miles onboard and were originally fitted with steel wheels and decorative wheel covers.
The NHTSA stated that this type of incident could potentially result in wheel separation and loss of vehicle control.
If the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will conclude that there is a real threat to the driver's safety, Ford will be forced to recall in service no less than 281.250 Fusions from the 2010 model year.
This is the first time that Ford is in the center of such an incident. Still for the moment we don't have enough information to say if this is only an isolated incident or if the 2010 Fusion really has a technical issue that requires a service recall.
