NHTSA investigates problems with the 2001 - 2007 VW Passat

Lately, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened a new investigation regarding the 2001 - 2007 Passat models and while this is one of the most appreciated products that group VW has on the American market; it seems that the Passat has its own issues when it comes to safety.
As it was reported, some 35 cars, both sedans and wagons have suffered problems with their ignition coils. Moreover, 14 of these incidents resulted in an under hood fire.
Now this wouldn't sound so nasty taking into account the close to 200.000 Passat cars that have been sold in the US only. Still, there is the issue of Volkswagen also having in the past another formal investigation from the NHTSA about similar problems with the 1996 - 2001 model where there were more than 80 complaints filed about engine fires and accidents provoqued by this kind of fires.
Now it remains to be seen if Volkswagen decides to give the Passat a massive check out recall or things will go under the carpet as it happened with the previous NHTSA investigation.
Strange enough, the European version of the 01-07 Passat hasn't received yet any complaints about similar incidents so this may very well be a local problem, located at one of the group's over the Ocean production facilities.
