Honda Fit beats Toyota Prius on hybrid car sales

Toyota Prius is undoubtedly one of the pioneers of the hybrid automotives technology and for the past 20 or so months there was no serious competition for the Japanese model. But now, for the very first time, the Prius has been dethroned as the best selling hybrid car in the Land of the Rising Sun and guilty for this performance is a pint sized model made by Toyota's main Japanese competitor, Honda.
The Honda Fit is a subcompact gas-electric model equipped with a 1.5 liter inline four cylinder propulsion unit mated to a five-speed gearbox that insures a fuel economy of 27 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. Still, the fuel economy is only a part of the overall motifs that made the Fit sell better than the Prius. There's also the matter of the more convenient price as the Fit sells for the yen equivalent of $19,331 US dollars, about $ 3,500 less than its basic Toyota counterpart.
On an overall basis it was obvious that sooner or later, there would be other car manufacturers that will succeed in creating fuel efficient hybrid models that will rival the one made by Toyota. So for the first time since the Prius was launched, the Japanese car manufacturer is placed in a situation where it could consider a price drop for the hybrid model in order to keep its customers happy. In the mean time, Honda has sold 14,873 Fit units only in January, about 14 percent more over the sales of January 2010 and the overall sales trend is raising.
