An update on the 2011 Buick Regal's 2.0-liter turbocharged engine enables the vehicle to run on any blend of gasoline or E85 Ethanol, has recently been released by General Motors. The output remains at 220 HP and 258 lb-ft of torque, thus suggesting that there are no performance differences between the standard 2.0-liter turbo engine and its flex-fuel variant, while the Detroit automaker announced that the Regal's flex-fuel capability was a first for a direct-injected turbocharged production car. The engine was allowed to run on E85 after the engineers made some changes because of the fact that ethanol required a richer air-fuel mixture than gasoline in order to have a proper functioning and, as a result, higher flow-rate injectors were attached to the engine. The engine management system automatically adjusts the mixture and provides the required, performance, fuel consumption and emissions, due to a sensor in the fuel system which measures the combination of ethanol and gasoline in the tank. Better durability, less noise and vibration are ensured by the new sand cast aluminum of the GM's 2.0-liter Ecotec turbo engine. This update for the Regal's engine marks an important step into the future of GM, which aims to register more than 50 percent of its production in flex-fuel models by the end of 2012, while more than 5 million flex-fuel cars have been out on the streets in the last 15 years.
