Recently, an updated version of the Cruze sedan, which bears the Series II moniker was introduced by Holden, General Motors' Australian division, bringing styling changes, chassis, powertrain, thus aiming to mark the switch to local production which begins from March, 2011. The Holden's plant in Elizabeth, South Australia, will the place where the first locally built compact model in the country, in more than a decade, is going to be manufactured. Up until the present moment, Korea was exporting the Holden Cruze sedan to Australia. The Cruze Series II hosts some styling improvements, which are still kept to a minimum and they focus on the front bumper, trapezoidal grille, the rear fascia treatment together with new headlamp bezels. Two new engines are available, a 2.0-liter turbo diesel and a 1.4-liter turbocharged gasoline unit, as the naturally aspirated 1.8-liter engine features some minor revisions from the Series 1 model. The new diesel engine boasts 120 kW at 3,800 rpm and 360 Nm at 1,750 rpm, which suggests an increased output by 9 percent, while the torque has been improved by a raise of 12.5 percent as compared to the previous engine. According to Holden's reports, the fuel economy is much more efficient with 5.6 lt/100 km when mated to the new six-speed manual gearbox and remains at 6.7 lt/100 km when it is connected to an optional automatic six-speed. Regarding the 1.4-liter turbocharged petrol, Holden has informed that it produces a peak torque of 200 Nm between 1,850-4,900 rpm and 103 kW at 4,900 rpm. While it is available as optional for the Cruze CD, it appears as standard on Sri and Sri-V models. The fuel economy of the 1.4 iTi returns 6.4 lt/100 km when it is equipped with the standard six-speed manual, while the optional six-speed automatic provides a fuel consumption of 6.4 lt/100 km. A range of chassis refinements, which includes the Watts link performance suspension which offers the customers a smoother ride and better handling qualities, feature all 1.4 iTi models. 17-inch five-spoke alloy wheels, side sills, a boot lip spoiler, bespoke front and rear fascia treatments, are also integrated in the new Cruze SRi and SRi-V models featuring the 1.4 iTi. Furthermore, some refinements were added to the 1.8-liter ECOTEC petrol engine, which delivers 176 Nm of torque at 3,800 rpm and 104 kW at 6,200 rpm, and they refer to an all-round improved driveability and a more lively launch feel. The 1.8 petrol returns 7 lt/100 km when it is equipped to the five-speed manual gearbox and 7.4 lt/100 km when it is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, which is said to incorporate an improved final drive ratio. Mike Devereux, Holden Chairman and Managing Director, stated that the Cruze had been tailored in order to successfully meet the needs of Australian motorists and fitted those people who appreciated style, comfort, convenience, combined with great interior space and high-tech performance options.
