A preliminary investigation has been initiated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and it concerns 200,000 Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner SUVs from the 2010 and 2011 model years. The reason seems to be several complaints that were received and they accuse the window glass in the tailgate shattered without warning. According to the agency, a number of 18 complaints were received and, unfortunately, in an injury accident, a woman and her 10 year old son were cut by glass fragments. It appears that most incidents took place during cold temperatures, as the vehicles which were built on or before October 15 might experience the liftgate window glass breaking, and the organization added that Ford planned to make an internal technical service bulletin to its dealers on November 22 2010, thus referring to broken windows in 2010-2011 Ford Escape and mercury Mariner SUVs. NHTSA instructed dealers to correct by bringing a replacement to the liftgate window glass after they had closely inspected for any signs of impact or external damage that may have caused the glass breakage. Ford's representatives stated that they were aware of the investigation and their aim was to cooperate with the safety agency. They faced a similar issue in September 2004, when 955,000 Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer SUVs were recalled. They were 2002 and 2003 model year. NHTSA announced that two models had faulty tailgate after a preliminary investigation.
