Hyundai reaches 5 million sales in Europe

Good news continues to arrive for the South Korean carmaker, which has announced the impressive figure of million vehicles sold in Europe since the first Hyundai Pony was imported in 1977. In 1996, nineteen years after the brand's introduction to Europe, the one Hyundai millionth car was also sold in Europe, thus proving the increasing way at Hyundai. In 2001, Hyundai achieved the second million mark, hitting three million sales in 2005 and four million in 2008. An i30 was the five millionth vehicle sold and was launched in 2007, selling a little over 320,000 units on the continent. A proof of Hyundai's accelerated growth in Europe is the fact that, from the five million sales, the last million was accomplished in just three years. The introduction of the "i" range brought the Korean automaker momentum. It started with the i30 in 2007, followed by the i10, i20, the ix20 compact MPV and the ix35 crossover and being the first Hyndai product engineered and designed for European customers, being built at the company first European plant at Nosovice, Czech Republic. Allan Rushforth, Senior Vice President and COO of Hyundai Motor Europe stated to the press that hitting five million sales was a great achievement, marking them out as a major player in what is the world's most competitive car market. He added that it was the beginning of the brand as they were planning for further sales growth during 2011, to take them to 3% market share in Europe. These ambitious targets can be achieved if Hyundai manages to increase the output of its Czech plant to 300,000 units a year and if the company obtains great success with its all-new i40 sedan and wagon, which are planned for launch in Europe at the end of 2011.
