The famed 24 hours at Nurburgring make up one of the most fascinating and grueling endurance races in the world and it is going to take place at the renowned German circuit this week-end. Volkswagen does not miss the opportunity and will join the race with three 450-hp Golf 24 cars as the 35th anniversary of the GTI coincides with this event at which more than 200 contenders participate. Thus, the German automaker managed to create a special version of the GTI for the event, while Volkswagen Motorsport has seriously worked on the development of a pure racing version. A turbocharged 5-cylinder 2.5-liter engine powers the Golf 24, an engine taken from the Audi TTRS and RS3 models and also mated to a sequential 6-speed gearbox and featuring four-wheel drive. Two Sciroccos 24 CNGs will be among the VW entries in the race, besides the three uber-Golfs. Even more interesting, Carlos Sainz, Giniel de Villiers and Nasser Al-Attiya, who are the winners of the Dakar for the past three years, will drive one of the two 330-hp bio-gas powered Sciroccos.
