It seemed that Mazda was panning to present its first diesel-powered model in the US last summer, but it didn't. Now, there is another story. A company spokesman not only made it official, but he also revealed a launch date. So, we will have the opportunity to see it in around 15 to 18 months after the launch of the Skyactiv-G gasoline engine in the Mazda 3 that arrived in showrooms last October. The diesel model will probably go on sale at the beginning of next year. We don't really know which model will get the diesel engine, but we suppose it's the CX-5 as it was recently launched and since it is already equipped with the Skyactive 2.2-liter diesel for Europe and Japan. In Europe the 2.2-liter 4-cylinder turbocharger is available in two variants, with 150 horsepower and 380 Nm of torque or 175 horsepower and 420 Nm of torque. Both send the power to the wheels through a standard 6-speed manual transmission. You also have as option a 6-speed automatic unit. The model is able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.0 seconds and can reach a top speed of 198 km/h. The 175 horsepower version can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.2 seconds and can reach a top speed of 202 km/h.
