Volkswagen XL1 Prototype is now out in the open

Around two years ago, back in 2009, German carmaker Volkswagen revealed a model, the L1 concept, that had a fuel consumption of only 1 liter / 100 km. Ever since the engineers have worked very hard to create a production version very close to the concept. Only last year they managed to present another concept, the Formula XL1 concept and last month the carmaker said that the 1 liter model will be sent to production. The customers will have the possibility to purchase the model starting next year. The car has the body of a coupe and the size of VW Polo. To keep the weight low, the carmaker used special materials and only for 23% of the car steel or iron. Under the hood it features a hybrid power-train that uses a two-cylinder turbocharged diesel with a displacement of 800 cc that is capable of producing 46 horsepower. All the output is being sent to the wheels through a DSG double clutch gearbox. This enables the car to speed from 0 to 62 mph in 11.9 seconds and to reach a top speed of 100 mph.
