GM is expanding Russia plant to develop the new Astra sedan

The GM Auto plant has expanded to St. Petersburg and Dan Akerson, who is the company's Chairman and CEO, travelled to Russia just to see work beginning, thus implying how important this facility is. GM Auto's annual production capacity is going to be doubled from the current 98,000 vehicles to 230,000 vehicles by 2015, building both Opel and Chevrolet models which will be delivered on the local and European market. The new Astra Sedan is to be found among these models and it will be presented to the enthusiast public in August at the Moscow International. GM Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson stated that General Motors was embarking on a new era in Russia, which was considered to be one of the world's fastest-growing vehicle markets, as part of their strategy to build where they sold. He added that the global vehicles that they produced together with the manufacturing systems that they were putting in place, were creating long-term benefits for Russia's automotive industry, its economy and supply base.
