BMW might be thinking about the M235i for 2014

600 units of the BMW 1-Series M Coupes will be sent to the North American market out of a total of 6.000 units available worldwide. For the ones that do not have the possibility to purchase one of the most affordable two-door compact, the German carmaker is preparing a surprise. Apparently the specialists are getting ready to create a successor looking like an M Performance coupe that has as base the M135i hatchback, a model launched not long ago, on the European market. To be more explicit, the M Performance is a new sub-brand that stands somewhere between the regular models and the M sport cars.

Next year at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the German carmaker will present a coupe version of the second generation 1-Series, called the 2-Seies. It will also have an M Performance variant that will be revealed at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show, later. Let us not forget that the Bavarian automaker did not confirm the change of names for the coupe and convertible models. To be more precise, it is not really official that the 1-Series is now the 2-Series and the 3-Series is now the 4-Series. No matter the name, BMW specialist will power the M235i with the same N55 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine capable of developing 316 horsepower and 450 Nm of torque. The output will be sent to the wheels through either a 6-speed manual transmission or through an 8-speed automatic one. Nothing is for sure, but there is the chance both the M135i and the M235i will be offered, as an option, with all-wheel drive.

There is a tiny, insignificant detail Auto-week forgot to mention. The M Performance version of the 1-Series Coupe already exists on the North American market as the 135is Coupe and Convertible. Both receive power from the N55 3.0-liter turbo engine that powers the M135i. This engine is capable of producing 320 horsepower.
