Some Ford and Mazda models seem to have problems

Carmakers Ford and Mazda still have to deal with different complaints coming from owners of the Ford Escape and Mazda Tribute SUVs powered by V6 engines built between 2001 and 2004. The reports refer to the so-called sticky accelerator pedals and simply do not let them alone. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration around 730.000 Escape and Tribute SUVs are affected in the US alone. It seems that the Office if Defects Investigation of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found 99 reports indicating throttle failing to return to idle when the accelerator pedal has been released. 68 reports came from Ford owners and 31 from Mazda owners. As results of the 99 reports indicating stuck throttle, there were 13 crashes, 9 injuries and 1 death. This last unfortunate one was a 17-year old girl from Arizona who passed away in January. After the investigation, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration the problem was the interference between the speed control cable and the appearance cover at the throttle body cam. This is the explication for the fatality that took place in January. The ones in charge with safety are trying to determine whether the throttle failures have something to do with the repairs performed in 2004 as part of safety recalls when 590.000 Escape and Tribute SUVs were involved. To be more precise, models built between 2002 and 2004 were checked for the accelerator cable assembly that could cause a stuck throttle risk. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration started an evaluation and will present the results as soon as possible. The preliminary evaluation refers to the scope, frequency and safety-related consequences of the so-called defect.
