Euro NCAP tested six brand new models and, apparently only one of them managed to receive the full 5-star rating. To be more precise, we are talking about the 2013 Audi A3 hatchback, the Ford B-MAX minivan, Isuzu D-Max pickup truck, the French Renault Clio supermini, Volvo V40 and last, but not least Kia Ceed hatchback.

Volvo carmaker managed to build the safest model off all six, the V40 5-door and this is not all. The hatchback became all-time top scorer in its segment after the Euro NCAP safety tests. The model, unlike the rest, uses the first Pedestrian Airbag technology in the world. This is being offered as standard throughout the range. How does it work? Well, the system lifts the bonnet and deploys an exterior airbag which covers the A-pillar. This actually offers an 88% score in pedestrian protection.

When it comes to the new Ford B-MAX, this scored 92% for adult occupant protection. The Euro NCAP offered points for the Active City Safety system. This new feature helps the driver activate the brakes in a very effective way in case of emergency.

The Audi A3, Renault Clio and Kia Ceed have also obtained five stars. The carmakers managed to offer improved pedestrian protection technologies in comparison with the previous models.

Even if the new Isuzu D-Max pickup truck received four stars, the specialists have noticed great improvement when it comes to the pedestrian protection, in comparison with the model tested back in 2008. Then, the model only got two stars for adult occupant protection and only one star for pedestrian protection.

The overall results in pedestrian protection obtained by Euro NCAP are quite satisfactory. Statistics demonstrate that 14% of all road traffic fatalities in Europe are pedestrians. In the last three years, Euro NCAP increased the requirements and this is how carmakers have embraced the challenge. A few years ago, these improvements were far from becoming reality, but now a lot of safety features are being offered as standard. euroncap
