Audi plans to develop synthetic fuels using CO2

German specialists from Audi are doing a research. Actually they are trying to obtain synthetic diesel and gasoline by using the CO2 emissions that normally are eliminated into the atmosphere. If you think this is easy, well you could not be more wrong. The whole process uses big transparent tubes filled with water that can measure up to 100 meters. Water is not the only thing it contains. Inside the tubes there are also genetically-modified cyanobacteria. When the sun light reaches the bacteria combined with the CO2, the carmaker will finally obtain the so called e-ethanol or gasoline and the e-diesel. It seems that the specialists have reached a very interesting conclusion.

According to Audi a vehicle that uses one of these two fuels will generate the same amount of CO2 as an EV. Audi has a lot of experience in this kind of research. They want to develop cars that can run on long distances in pure electric mode and that can be charged from an electrical outlet, the e-tron models. Electrification is very important for the carmaker and this is why their engineers are studying every aspect of the process. They offer new types of energy storage technologies, intelligent operating strategies and an electrified all-wheel drive vehicle, the e-tron Quattro. They want to obtain vehicle concepts that are capable of offering maximum utility and gather all the strengths of the brand. The first plug-in hybrid models developed by Audi will be available on the market starting 2014.

All carmakers want to offer vehicles with reduced fuel consumption. For this, Audi is offering the predictive efficiency assistant. Thanks to a navigation system, the model will receive impulses from the surround sensors suggesting a predictive style of driving and this way lower the amount of fuel used. There are no precise data on the matter, but if everything goes well, the German automaker will open a commercial plant for developing these two new types of fuel. Nothing will happen before 2014.
