Is the Cadillac ELR plug-hybrid coupe better with FWD?

It seems that Cadillac will produce the new ELR plug-hybrid coupe at the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant. The process will begin sometime next year. There is not a lot of information on the new model, but what we do know is that it will have as base the 2009 Cadillac Converj Concept. The car will also feature a lot of electric technologic elements borrowed from the Chevrolet Volt. In the end we have a T-shaped lithium-ion battery with an electric drive unit, but also a certain 4-cylinder engine that uses a generator to offer power to the electric motor. One of the questions a lot of us had is whether the new Cadillac ELR plug-hybrid concept would keep the same front engine, front-wheel drive layout just like the Volt or if the carmaker would offer a new platform with a front engine, rear-wheel drive configuration. The answer came rather fast. In the end, the specialists have opted for the FWD variant, because, according to them, it is more efficient. GM spent a lot of money trying to develop the platform for the Volt and this is why they are trying to use it, but also its technology for this new model. This type of battery is a better fit for a FWD model. The RWD car with a T-shaped battery would have caused a lot of extra work. The good thing about the RWD is that this layout would have clearly differentiated the Cadillac ELR from the Volt. This way General Motors would have the opportunity to obtain the attention of more people. On the other hand the RWD would eat some of the passenger space and would modify the center of gravity affecting handling. The new Cadillac ELR plug-hybrid coupe will now be offered with FWD, for sure.
