Mercedes-Benz wants to expand its SUV range by 2015

Germans from Mercedes-Benz have launched an estate version of the already existing CLS 4-door coupe, but with 5-doors and an elongated roof, apparently. When it comes to the SUV market, the carmaker has the compact GLK, the mid-size ML and the full-on GL-Class. In only a few years, they will also have the GLA compact crossover based on the A-Class. For the ones interested in the off-road capabilities of the Land Rover Defender, Mercedes-Benz specialists have developed an improved version of the G-Wagon. Why not in the end? This project is currently under consideration according to different sources. The new model will actually be a sister model to the GLA found under the X156 code-name nicknamed the mini-G. According to the carmaker, both compact crossovers will have the same A-Class platform, but it seems that the GLA will be a bit more stylish with on-road handling and more luxurious. The mini-G will be more off-road capable looking a lot like the full-size G-Wagon. In terms of engine, the engineers might start with a 1.6-liter petrol just like the one found in the A- and B-Class, but chances are it might also get the 2.0-liter engine available as a petrol or diesel. It seems that the mini-G will be available with front-wheel drive. Even so, the all-wheel drive 4Matic versions are expected to be the most popular with a more conventional Haldex clutch. The new Mercedes-Benz X156 is still on the wait, but also it seems to reach the market sometime in 2015 as it is first in line for approval ahead of other projects like an A-Class Coupe. Nothing is for sure yet, but more info on the matter will be released soon, for sure.
