BMW plans to introduce the front-wheel drive cars

Bavarians from BMW plan to introduce front wheel drive cars and of course, there are a lot of skeptics. The specialists plan to introduce the 1-Series GT first. This was actually previewed by the Active Tourer concept that we had the opportunity to see for the first time at the 2012 Paris Motor Show in September. The carmaker plans to rival the Mercedes-Benz B-Class starting next year. According to a study, 40% of BMW and Mini customers want a front-wheel drive BMW in the next 8 to 10 years. The carmaker also claims that the new FWD ULK platform is one of the elements that will stand at the base of future growth. Different specialists say that the premium small car will become the fastest-growing segment and that the ULK will aid BMW to benefit from its growth. The FWD platform provides a lot of advantages. Just to be clear, the rear-wheel drive 1-Series offers less rear space than its rivals. This problem will be fixed with the front-wheel drive platform, soon as this platform is flexible enough to underpin a number of different versions.

It seems that the FWD BMW models will be offered for the European market, but US and China may also be on the list. ISH Automotive forecasts that the Bavarian company will meet its target of 2 million units per year very easy before the end of 2020. BMW expects to sell 960.000 ULK-based BMW and Mini models annually. The Group estimates sales will rise from 1.76 million vehicles sold this year to 2.58 million units as the compact and subcompact segments accounting for 70% of that growth. There are big chances the front wheel drive BMW will not be as successful as the carmaker might hope. Of course, anything is possible.
