2013 brings a lot of safe cars according to the IIHS

The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety offers the Top Safety Pick+ award to 13 cars. There are also 117 additional vehicles that will receive the TOP SAFETY PICK. The winners include the Acura TL, Dodge Avenger and also the Chrysler 2004-door, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord 2-door, Honda Accord 4-door, Kia Optima, Nissan Altima 4-door and Subaru Legacy and the Subaru Outback. The list continues with the Suziki Kizashi, Volkswagen Passat and the Volvo S60. Except the Acura TL and Volvo S60 which are midsize luxury cars, the other models are midsize moderately priced cars. The specialists have tested 29 models in small overlap frontal crash test and 13 of them offer the highest level of all-around crash protection.

The winners must earn good ratings for occupant protection in at least 4 of 5 evaluations. To qualify for Top Safety Pick cars must have good ratings for occupant protection in the moderate overlap frontal test, side impact, rollover and rear tests, regardless of their small overlap rating. The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety introduced the small overlap test last year to improve occupant protection in frontal crashes. In the test 25 % of the front end of the car on the driver side strikes a 5-foot tall rigid barrier at 40 mph. A Hybrid III dummy representing a 50th percentile male is belted in the driver seat. Honda modified both versions of the Accord to behave impeccable in the test. Ford and Nissan have also changed their 2013 models which are already in production.

The IIHS offered the first Top Safety Pick award to 2006 models and has introduced a lot of other criteria since then. The stability control is no longer a criteria because is standard under federal rules for 2012 and later cars as well. This is all on the matter so far, folks. autoblog
