Several Subaru models suffer because of sizes


We all know that ever since the introduction of the production version of the FT-Concept in the form of Toyota  86 / GT 86, Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S trio coupes which in fact have almost the same rear-wheel drives, were never enough. People kept asking for more powerful versions, powered by a forced induction engine mostly. There was a lot of pressure for the carmaker and tried to take some measures.



The expectations actually made sense as the Spanish carmaker designed the all-new 2.0liter normally aspirated flat-four with Toyota offering the specially made fuel injection system. Even so, the manufacturer has a long history of using turbocharged boxer engines in almost all its models. Nobuo Kyotoku, the engine design department project team manager of the company was asked the same question by the ones who named the 2.0L FA, the designation of the motor, one of the 10 best engines of the year. His answer was yes and no then he explained. The fist answer was given because a turbocharged version all the all-aluminum FA is prepared for production. The model will receive power from a newly-introduced engine borrowed from a Forester crossover and it is capable of generating 250 horsepower and 349 Nm of torque. The NO answer was given apparently because this engine might not fit the BRZ of its other siblings. Why? The models do not have sufficient space in the engine compartment to fit the bottom-mounted turbocharger.



All this project of developing high-technology, high-revving, lightweight engine was very difficult for the engineers, but the whole idea was to please customers and the feedbacks received were almost all positive. For the ones that are not completely satisfied with the chassis because it is hard to handle with 200 horsepower and 204 Nm of torque, the carmaker said they could improve the performance by reducing friction and enhancing combustion.
