The Porsche 911 turns 50

German carmaker Porsche celebrates 50 years of experience with the 911. The specialists have introduced the first model back in 1963 and in the gallery below you will have the possibility to see the differences between the original model and the current one. The first model was the Type 901 and was revealed at the IAA International Automotive Show in September 1963. Now, the 911 is actually a point of reference for all other Porsche series. The carmaker managed to sell more than 820.000 911 units, making it one of the most successful sports cars in the world. Beside the classics yet unique lines, the Porsche 911 has always been distinguished by its advanced technology. The 911 was committed to the performance principle from the start and motor racing is its most important test lab, according to the manufacturer. Until now around 30.000 victories were obtained with a 911.

To celebrate the great event, Porsche will organize a wide variety of anniversary events, starting with the Retro Classics automobile show that will take place in Stuttgart. Starting on the 7th and until the 10th of next month, the Porsche Museum will ring in the anniversary year with four special exhibits. The carmaker is also sending an authentic 1967 model 911 on a world tour and over the year will travel to five continents where it will be shown in places like Pebble Beach, Shanghai, Goodwood, UK, Paris and Australia. The model will also participate at many international fairs, historical rallies and motor sport events.

The second 911 generation appeared in 1973, ten years after its premiere. The Classis Modern, the 964 appeared in 1988. In 1993, the 993 was out followed by the 996 in 1997. In 2004, the carmaker introduced the 997 and in 2011, the 911 which represents the greatest technical leap in the evolution of the 911.
