Land Rover will receive a 9-speed ZF automatic transmission

Get ready for the 2013 edition of the Geneva Motor Show as a lot of carmakers have confirmed their presence and so a lot of incredible models equipped with most innovative technologies will be displayed. We will not turn our attention towards the Land Rover. Apparently the specialists will present a new 9-speed automatic transmission that will be used on its passenger cars and also SUVs. The new 9-speed ZF automatic transmission was developed in collaboration with ZF transmission specialist and Land Rover which was in fact a lead partner in the project. Of course this information is not 100 % sure, but this is what the British part declared. The new system was designed especially for transverse applications and so the ZF unit is rather compact in dimensions. Despite the fact that it only has three more gears, it is only 6 mm longer and actually weighs 7.5 kg less than the current 6-speed transmission that it replaces. The British carmaker said that by increasing the number of gear ratios from 6 to 9 provides important improvement in fuel consumption and a significant reduction of CO2 emissions. One of the special features the new ZF transmission has is the adaptive shifting system that allows the software to learn from the techniques used by the driver, sharpening up during brisk driving then slipping seamlessly into more economical regime. The new unit has been developed exactly to match the unique attributes of Land Rover vehicles. The new system will improve performance, refinement and also will improve efficiency. More information on the matter is expected to be released very soon, maybe before the Geneva Motor Show begins. Worst case scenario, the spicy details will be presented in about one week at the great event automotive enthusiasts wait for.
