Tata Nano models have a lot of success

Unlike all expectations, the Tata Nano did not have the opportunity to enjoy the success the Indian carmaker has envisioned for it when it was introduced in 2008, despite being the cheapest new car. The first customers have received their cars in July 2009. According to the manufacturer, only 229.157 Nano models have been sold in India, although the plant that makes it has a capacity of 250.000 units per year. Last month, sales have dropped by around 86 % in comparison the previous year, which is totally out of the blue. It might sound a bit strange, but the reason for the lack of appeal is actually that fact that the car is too cheap. Because it only cost $2.800, buyers do not really see it as a car. For this reason, Tata Motors is thinking of a new strategy in terms of new models. They have introduced the Nano as an alternative to a motor scooter. Tata wants to introduce new models that have as base the Nano, but that cost more, if this seems to be the problem. In the gallery below you have the opportunity to see the 2011 Tata Pixel concept which is actually an example of what he has in mind for the brand. The new model has as base the Nano and was fitted with scissor doors, a diesel engine and, to transfer the output to the wheels, an automatic transmission. The carmaker refused to offer further information on the new model, but what they did say was that that car will be available at different prices and will be available for different buyers. We can only wait and see if the new strategy will work and if more expensive models will bring more customers.
