Fiat and Maserati might shake hands for a V8 turbo diesel engine

Starting with Quattroporte that uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 diesel Maserati is showing intensions to develop a new and bigger diesel engine.Italian sources are revealing that the Fiat Group is working on a 4.0-liter V8 turbo-diesel engine. The Fiat Group is taking its chances to a gap set by German manufacturers BMW and Mercedes that do not produce any more V8 technology due to the global financial problems.

Comparing to the V6 set on the Quattroporte that develops 275 HP (202 kW) and 600 Nm (443 lb-ft) of torque the new V8 will produce 365 HP (268 kW) and 622 Nm (460 lb-ft) of torque. Also the 4.0-liter V8 turbo-diesel engine will be more fuel efficient due to the Multijet clean-diesel technologies.  The fuel consumption can drop to a value of 30 mpg US (36 mpg UK / 7.8 L/100km) which is excellent paralleling to the 47 mpg UK (39.2 mpg US or 6 liters / 100 km) of the smaller V6 diesel.

If the turbo-diesel V-6 available in the new Maserati Ghibli will be a success the Fiat Group can start producing the 4.0-liter V8 turbo-diesel engine but no sooner that 2016, so it is a rumor that still need confirmation.
