Volvo needs partner to create a hybrid supermini

Based on very good selling for the V60 Plug-In Hybrid model Volvo wants to extend its production from 1,000 units in 2013 to 4,000 - 6,000 in 2014. At Volvo's Torslanda plant in Gothenburg the plug-in hybrid diesel is assembled in premiere. But the Sweden manufacturer has more plans for the next future.

Volvo is now looking for a business partner to develop a platform for a new supermini electric/hybrid model. This is a good market strategy if you want to cover more than one segment area and gain customers with a cheaper supermini hybrid car. If a suitable partnership will be created, Volvo can achieve a second goal: to reduce CO2 emissions. A new small and environmental friendly version can surely gain a respected place in the B-segment. Volvo's officials said that they do not have any plans at the moment, but they all know the role of the B-segment is increasing in terms of sales and pushing down average emissions. Even then they’d need a platform partner and a guarantee of an electric or hybrid powertrain.

In 2015, Geely, the owner of the Swedish brand will launch its Scalable Platform Architecture, which will serve as a base for manufacturing the next S60 to the range-topping next generation XC90.  If the new supermini electric car will be developed is still unclear, but if Volvo’s ideas will materialize, this version can surely be a best seller car.
