Angela Merkel wants a million EVs in Germany by 2020

Back in 2010, Angela Merkel, the chancellor of Germany said she wants to see 1 million electric cars on German roads by 2020. It seems that times have changed and that not in the right direction. People have avoided buying electric vehicles apparently and so, her message was not taken so seriously. At the beginning of this year, only 7.114 out of the 43.4 million passenger vehicles in Germany were Electric Vehicles. Not matter if we add the hybrid vehicles to the electric ones, the number remains too unconvincing. The total number of models sold reaches only 72.109. The German chancellor declared at the beginning of this week that she understands that these plans are ambitious, but she continues to believe that are not impossible to achieve. Analysts seem to think differently. They say the goal mentioned is too ambitious. The explication for Germans not buying the model is quite simple, actually. We all know electric cars can cost with up to EUR10.000 more than a similar car powered by a gasoline engine. Other disadvantages refer to long charging times and range anxiety which were not very helpful. One thing is clear: consumers will start buying electric vehicles as soon as they get reasonable prices and enough charging infrastructure, and these are not absurd requests. Low sales have also been influenced by a lack of government incentives, which in other countries like the UK and France are available. Before the end of this year, Daimler, BMW and VW plan to introduce 16 new electric or hybrid models. Today we only have only one, the Smart ForTwo electric, but it seems that things are about to change.
