The Volvo LCP 2000 Concept turns 30

Carmakers have tried obtaining advanced safety and efficiency since forever. Well, maybe not forever, but still, a long time. This aim got powerful in the last years thanks to the shift in climate. There are a lot of people that have blamed carmakers and car users because of the CO2 emissions. There have been a lot of producers that have chosen the green side, but the sad part is that most of the time was only for the image and nothing else. Volvo is one of the manufacturers that have shown interested in this field more than 30 years ago. The specialists have shown us the efficient way to move forward. Back in 1993 they have created the LCP 2000 concept model which has been designed as an efficient solution to getting around. They have also wanted to create something that would still be viable in 2000 and this was it. They came with idea back in 1979, and then was when the whole process began. The engineers were very strict and wanted to set precise guidelines, especially for the historical period in which they were attempting the whole thing. Because they wanted to have a model with a fuel consumption of less than 4 liters per 100 km, they have decided the model should not have more than 700 kg. The specialists have used different types of plastic, but also aluminum and magnesium. These are actually lighter than conventional materials and the ones they have used, were made in such a way that they would be easily recyclable when the cars would ultimately end up scrapped. Until 1983, the engineers have managed to build four cars, each boasting subtle technical differences from one another, but even so, all were equipped with transverse 3-cylinder diesel engines capable of generating 50 or 90 horsepower. To transfer the output to the wheels, the engineers have offered a 5-speed manual or electronically-controlled CVT. This model was an inspiration for Volvo for building the 480.
