Jeep Compass now in UK

Chrysler's compact SUV, has finally reached the UK market. The Jeep Compass seems to have started living to the original hype a bit late in life. Seven years ago, this small crossover arrived with some innovative ideas but also some considerable downsides. But over several refreshes and upgrades, Jeep has managed to fine tune it and bring it in line with buyers' expectations — and much more in tune with where true north has been in the past.

The 2014 Compass utilizes a pair of four-cylinder motors developed as a joint venture between Mitsubishy, Hyundai and obviously Chrysler. The base engine is a 2.0-liter pumping out 154 horsepower and 141 lb-ft of torque that is slightly overwhelmed by the vehicle's mass, though highway mileage is respectable at up to 30 mpg. The zero-to-60 benchmark comes in at slightly more than 10 seconds.

A 2.4-liter unit provides a bit more power: 168 HP and 165 lb-ft of torque. Though mileage per gallon falls with the bigger motor, the zero-to-60 mile time gets to roughly nine seconds. A recently announced option for the UK is the 2.2-liter 161HP engine, with torque and mpg values falling in the middle of the spectrum provided by the 2.0 and 2.4 engines.

For 2014, Jeep replaces the often-criticized continuously variable transmission that’s been used in the Compass since its introduction, with a new six-speed stop-gear automatic. The Sport 4x2 model will come with the five-speed manual transmission, whilst the new six-speed PowerTech automatic transmission is mated to
the 2.4-litre petrol engine.

There are no concrete details about the pricing yet. However, given the already published figures outside of the UK, of $20,000 for the base Sport and a $27,000 for the Limited, we may go out on a limb and state they'll probably not be much more expensive for the UK market. The newly announced North Trim should come just slightly under the Limited. We shall wait and see if that's the case
