The Bentley Continental GT V8 S has been revealed ahead of its public debut at the Frankfurt motor show next week. The brand new, and sportier version of the Continental will be available in convertible and coupe forms.
The all-wheel-drive V8 S will bump output of the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 by 21 hp and 15 lb-ft of torque, from the original version of 500hp and 487 lb-ft to 521 hp and 502 lb-ft of torque. The manufacturers claim this is achieved without negatively affecting the model’s fuel economy nor its previous range of 500-plus miles. They explain this comes partly from the variable displacement function that allows the V-8 to run on four cylinders for cruising. The V8 also uses a high-pressure direct-injection system, advanced cooling, low-friction bearings, and an efficient turbocharger layout. The twin-turbo 4.0-liter engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. This system has an “S” mode that tunes throttle response, shifts faster, and can hold gears for longer periods of time. Although the V8 S features cylinder deactivation, the exhaust system is tuned so as to keep the engine purring like you would expect from a GT V8, and dramatically change the tone at wide open throttle.
Continental GT V8 S models have a lower ride height (10 mm), whilst the suspension has increased spring rates (45 per cent front and 33 per cent rear). It will also come equipped with stiffer bushes and anti-roll bars to provide sharper handling. The steering is recalibrated as well, while the stability control system has a set-up which allows more wheel slip at higher speeds.
The new Bentley Continental GT-V8-S will go on sale in early 2014. Prices are likely to start at around £130,000. More details will be revealed at the Frankfurt motor show next week.
