Jaguar has recently released a teaser image of the C-X17, a crossover design study that’s set to preview an all-new, modular aluminium architecture which is destined to feature in many more future JLR models. The Jaguar C-X17 concept, which will be revealed at the Frankfurt auto show, previews an SUV / crossover vehicle planned by the brand to rival the BMW X3 and Audi Q3.
The single image released suggests that the C-X17 will have a sporty character, with a similar outline to the Porsche Cayenne. Few details can be made out, but the rear lights are clearly visible and are similar to those of the F-type.
The crossover will be named the XQ or Q-type while the sedan will be called the XS, according to reports. Both vehicles are set to launch in the second half of 2015.
Given the nature of the showcase model, it’s been widely speculated that the platform could also accommodate compact crossover and full-size SUV models. It would give Jaguar the model diversity to further challenge the likes of the German Big Three, all of whom feature broad model portfolios. Whether this would potentially tread on Land Rover’s toes could be the deciding factor in such a prospect.
The compact crossover and compact sedan would broaden Jaguar's appeal by giving the brand more affordable vehicles.
Jaguar's global sales increased 33 percent to 43,793 in the first seven months of 2013 compared with the same period in 2012. Their partners, Land Rover, had sales improve by 11 percent to 198,008 during the same period.
As for the C-X17, it's a bit early to start drawing conclusions. We shall wait for more details to be released on September 9 on the eve of the Frankfurt Motor show's first press day.
