Alonso remains the highest-paid driver in F1, earning almost $30 million annually from his salary with Ferrari in a contract that runs up until 2016.
The driver is the number one paid in the whole world of motorsport, followed by F1 Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton, who reportedly makes $27.5 million per year. In third place stands Nascar driver Dale Earnhardt jr, with $26 million.
According to Forbes, F1’s reigning triple world champion and 2013 title leader Sebastian Vettel makes $18 million per year, slightly less than Nascar’s Jeff Gordon.
As for Alonso (full name Fernando Alonso Diaz), the 32year old racer sits near the top of the 2013 F1 standings and is gunning for his third World Championship after placing second to Sebastian Vettel.
The Spanish driver definitely fits the legend standard quo. Having started in karting from the age of 3, you could have said the F1 would be his destiny (and so far it's proving that way). He won three consecutive karting championships in Spain from 1994 to 1997, and he became world karting champion in 1996 at just 15 years old.
Alonso made his Formula One debut in the 2001 season with Minardi, and then moved to the Renault as a test driver in 2012. Next year, Alonso became one of the main drivers of the Renault team. On September 25th of 2005, he won the Formula One World Driver's Championship title being just 24, which at that time made him the youngest ever Formula One Champion.
The driver has an incredible following, his fan phenomenon being suggestively called 'Alonsomanía'. Alonso's fans can usually be recognized by the light blue and yellow flags -which incidentally are the same colours used by Renault up until 2006-.
In the last decades, Formula One remained a great sport, but it also became a huge business. Magnificent drivers like Alonso and his whopping $30,000,000 year sallary can attest that and (hopefully) give the viewers the show they are paying for.
