McLaren Celebrates 50 Years With 3000th 12C coming off Assembly Line

One of the major players in Formula One, McLaren, recently celebrated its 50 years anniversary.

The F1 company started life in a small suburban office but now has roughly 2,000 workers based in its futuristic factory, where F1 cars are built and tested, as well as McLaren’s road cars. Engineers are currently finishing the first batch of the £866,000 P1 supercar due to be delivered to lucky customers next year. McLaren's headquarters was designed by architect Sir Norman Foster and opened in 2004. It houses some cutting-edge manufacturing facilities including its factory, wind tunnel, simulators, R&D centres for the F1 team as well as the top secret department where McLaren road cars are designed.

As part of the continued celebrations for the 50th anniversary of McLaren, a limited edition model is in the productions, celebrating five decades of race-winning technology and expertise of the British brand. The McLaren 50 12C will be strictly limited to a maximum of 100 units worldwide, split between just 50 examples of the 12C and 50 of the 12C Spider.

Some of the major names that have raced under the Mclaren banner in Formula One include Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost and Mika Hakkinen.

McLaren was a one man dream 50 years ago, Bruce McLaren's dream. The company he created transformed the world of motorsports. Unfortunately, he didn't live to see all of the success that his company has achieved, having died at just 32 while testing his M8D CanAm car. Despite this, his legacy carries on, even more succesful than during his living years.

This first half of a century seems to be just the starting-point for even more ambitious growth, as McLaren establishes itself as one of the most dynamic high-technology car producers in the world.
