More and more SUV manufacturers are making the transition to lighter, car-based “unibody” construction in order to achieve a better fuel economy. However, there’s a subset of SUV buyers who actually want the body-on-frame, heavy-duty construction of a truck-based SUV. Well, either that Or they’re rappers who just want a big heavy car.
Chevrolet has recently posted a teaser on their Facebook page hinting that the 2015 Tahoe and Suburban will both be revealed on Thursday, September 12. The current American models have been around since 2007 and have gone through years of strong and steady sales. With market shares at about 50%, the Tahoe and Suburban siblings are one of the leading players in the full-size SUV segment. GM’s market share in this sector is even higher if you add in the platform mates from GMC (Yukon) and Cadillac (Escalade).
However, given that about 7 years have gone since the current models have come out, this current cycle should reach its end and let room for something completely new. Unfortunately not a lot of details have leaked so far.
Based on the limited data, it appears the new cars will have a couple of elements incorporated from the 2014 Chevy Silverado. It is highly expected we'll see them with V8 engines, and hopefully a better mileage per gallon. Engine options should include a 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8 pumping out 355 bhp (265 kW) and 383 lb-ft (518 Nm) of torque, and a 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V8 with an output of 420 bhp (313 kW) and 450 lb-ft (609 Nm) of torque.
The new Tahoe and Suburban will be launched in 2014 as models for 2015. It's expected they'll get plenty of showing-off during the next year. Since the NY Chevrolet unveiling is only a couple of days away, stay tuned. More details shall emerge soon.
