2014 BMW i8 debuts in Frankfurt

After months of claiming to have built the "ultimate driving machine," BMW has finally had the chance to prove it yesterday, setting a new tone for its future vehicles with the unveiling of the all-new i8 plug-in hybrid coupe.

The BMW i8 is a 2+2-seater with an intelligent lightweight construction and an innovative new design, which BMW refers to as 'LifeDrive architecture'. This comes from the i8's aluminium chassis (dubbed Drive) and a carbonfibre-reinforced plastic passenger cell (called Life).

The plug-in hybrid system uses the 1.5 liter TwinPower Turbo engine with 3 cylinders pumping out 231 HP (170 kW) and 236 lb-ft (320 Nm) of torque. The engine is paired with a six speed automatic transmission. As for the eDrive electric motor, this produces 131 HP and 250 Nm of torque. Combined, the hybrid system tips the scale at 362 HP (266 kW) and 420 lb-ft (570 Nm) of torque which enables it to launch from 0 to 100 km/h in as little as 4.4 seconds. In spite of the high engine output, its fuel consumption with both power sources used is at an impressive 40 km/l. BMW says that the i8’s driving range in “everyday conditions” is slightly over 310 miles (~499km). Emitting less than 59 grams of CO2 per kilometer, it may as well be the most eco-friendly car in Europe.

The i8 can run on electricity alone for up to 22 miles (35km) at speeds of up to 75 mph / 120 kmh. Recharging takes 3.5 hours with a 110-volt outlet or 1.5 hours if a higher-voltage BMW charging station is used.

Depending on buyers' preferences, and how much money they'll be willing to spend on gas, they can choose from five driving modes that either save gas or add performance: Eco Pro or Comfort, each with a choice of hybrid or electric-only operation. The fifth one is a more performance-focused Sport setting with manual gearchanges and hybrid power.

The BMW i8 will go on sale in the spring of 2014, with a starting price of $135,925.
