It has been reported that Suzuki in America has recalled 193.936 Grand Vitara SUVs and SX4s for a suspicion of faulty airbag sensors. If the air bag sensor mats are indeed defective, the air bag has the potential to deploy when there is a child or a small adult on the front seat.
The recall does not concern cars which have the OCS sensor mat fitted under a special coverage campaign. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration informed that the recalled autos are Gran Vitaras from 2006-2011 manufactured before the 27th of April 2011. Also, the automotive maker recalled all the SX4 vehicles built between 2007 and 11th of May 2011.
The manufacturer was aware of the dangerous potential of the airbag sensor. In September 2012 Suzuki tried to solve the issue through a special coverage campaign; but without actually initiating a recall.
The autos` safety for the passenger equipment includes airbags conducted by a weight sensor that determines whether the occupant is a child or an adult. Theoretically, when the front weight is of 45 pounds the airbag theoretically shuts down and does not deploy. When the weight rises, up to approximately 108 pounds, the airbag only deploys depending on the severity of the collision.
In the case of the Gran Vitaras and SX4s in cause, there is the possibility that the classification system sensor mat to malfunction by developing an electrical circuit fault. This can be due to `repeated flexing of the mat from use of the seat` and results in deployment in case of a frontal collision even if the front seat is occupied by a child.
Luckily, up to this moment, no accidents or injuries due to this sensor issue were reported (Suzuki).
The owners of such a car will be informed about the recall in October 2013. However, the necessary parts for fixing the problem are, at the moment, limited. Therefore, the drivers are to receive a second notification when parts will be available and the unit will be fixed for a safer drive.
