Mercedes-Benz gives up on the V8 5.5-liter engine

Mercedes-Benz is one of Europe’s greatest automakers. This is due partly to the intense competition between the German brands and of course because of the company’s desire to score points in its favour. And a great number of these points were brought by the twin-turbo V8 5.5-liter engine placed on various models, including the newly introduced Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG. However, the German manufacturer decides to give up on this engine configuration after the current generation S63 AMG.

The Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG is powered by an updated Euro 6-compliant twin-turbo V8 5.5-liter engine which delivers 585 bhp (436 kW) and 900 Nm (664 lb-ft) of torque. The direct-injected gasoline engine has Piezo injectors and an all-aluminum crankcase with four valves per cylinder. It is built with an air-to-water intercooler and comes with an ECO start/stop function. It works together with a seven-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT sports transmission. The AMG representative admits that the engine seems to receive negative impact.

There are chances that the twin-turbo V8 5.5-liter engine won’t be used for the next generation E-Class models scheduled to debut in 2016 or on other new models.  The C-Class will receive an AMG version powered by a V8 4.0-liter engine, this time, developed by mating two 4-cylinder 2.0-liter turbocharged engines from the A45 AMG. The future AMG models will most likely get hybrid versions of the 4.0-liter engine, since electric and hybrid vehicles are in fashion these days.
