The final countdown for the Green Car of the Year Award

The Green Car of the Year is an award from the Green Car Journal. The winner is selected by an eleven member panel comprising automotive and environmental experts. And the five finalists that will fight for the mighty award have just been chosen. Considering the name of the competition, you would probably expect that the winner would be chosen out of the electric vehicles, or at least from the hybrid ones. Well, you might be surprised by the finalists. Let’s get to know them.

And the 2014 Green Car of the Year award will not go to an electric vehicle, as there is no such a vehicle among the five finalists. Surprisingly, names such as the Tesla Model S or the BMW i3 haven’t even reached the final. The list includes some diesel fueled cars such as the Audi A6 TDI producing 38 mpg hwy and the BMW 328d which does 45 mpg. In the top five we also meet the new Mazda 3 that gives 41 mpg which is currently produced as hatchback and sedan versions. Another name on the list is the ultimate generation Toyota Corolla in the Eco trim, which does 42 mpg. The only car that seems to be closer to the name of the competition is the Honda Accord hybrid, producing 47 mpg which is also available in a plug-in variant that returns 46 mpg.

The Los Angeles Auto Show planned for November, will be the host of the event that decides the Green Car of 2014. An increasing number of vehicle models are considered for the Green Car of the Year program each year, a reflection of the auto industry's expanding efforts in offering new vehicles with higher efficiency and improved environmental impact. Finalists are selected for their achievements in raising the bar in environmental performance. Having the final list, we can make our own assumptions before the winner is decided in a couple of weeks.
