Geneva Motor Show represents a true competition between brands. Everyone tries to achieve high goals and to amaze the public. One of the last year’s Geneva Motor Show news was the Audi A3 Sportback g-tron and the e- tron plug- in hybrid variant. Now, after a year, Audi starts taking orders in Germany for the g-tron which is priced at 25,900 EUR.
The Audi A3 Sportback g-tron is powered by a 4-cylinder, 1.4-liter TFSI gasoline engine that generates 110 HP (81 kW) and 200 Nm (147 lb-ft) of torque. It might seem like a normal A3 but the model can run not only on gasoline, but also on natural gas and Audi-generated e-gas. When running in e-gas mode, the vehicle is "entirely CO2-neutral." The g-tron switches to gasoline operation automatically when the onboard CNG runs low, but the switch also can be triggered manually.
The g-tron possesses 12 horsepower less than the regular A3 1.4 TSI. To allow CNG operation, Audi worked on some changes in the turbocharger, cylinder head, injection system, and the catalytic converter. The two tanks, installed under the boot floor, can be filled with 7 kg (15.3 lbs) of CNG at a max pressure of 200 bar. The fuel consumption will be of 3.5 kg/ 100 km when using the gas and can be enough for 242 miles( 400 km). Both tanks are made from carbon fiber- reinforcement polymer. Each of them has a 27 kg( 59.5 lbs) weight when they are full.
The e-gas is in fact synthetic methane produced by Audi at its e-gas facility situated in Werlte in Lower Saxony, Germany. Audi is confident that an e-gas-running A3 Sportback represents "the most environmentally friendly form of long-distance mobility." As a response to more and more stringent CO2 emissions regulation, European carmakers are beginning to create vehicles fueled by compressed natural gas (CNG). The latest and possibly most advanced of these is the Audi A3 g-tron which becomes a friendlier car to the environment.
