We are actually talking about a new 8-speed automatic transmission which will come in handy when replacing the current 6-speed automatic transmission which Corvetts have it as optional. There have been a lot of rumors about this, but it stopped being one after the Society of Automotive Engineers have made this information public and confirmed. According to the details, the new 8-speed automatic transmission will have the capability of handling more than 1.000 Nm of torque.
The car equipped with it might also be capable of an overall ration spread of 7.0, which is also quite impressive. The name of the new transmission might be 8L90 and the engineers built it to enable a quicker off-the-line acceleration as it comes with a shorter first gear ratio. All this was possible thanks to the two cogs that came as extra. So that you know, the new transmission also promises a better highway fuel economy just because the engine runs at lower rotations per minute in the 8th speed. Just to compare, the 2014 Corvette Stingray is capable of offering 28 mpg in terms of fuel consumption on the highway and this can only mean that the output in this matter will be improved and the model will be able of offering 30 mpg of fuel consumption. The Corvette hides a 6.2-liter V8 engine capable of generating 455 horsepower at the moment and it might do even better with the fuel economy of the 7-speed manual transmission that currently offers 29 mpg on the highway.
