Mercedes-Benz is one of Europe’s greatest automakers. This is due partly to the intense competition between the German brands and of course because of the company’s desire to score points in its favour. And a great number of these points were brought by their great engines placed on the models they manufacture. Well, it seems that the engine powering the S-Class will receive a new mate to help run the vehicle. According to the rumours, the Mercedes officials decided to introduce the 9G-TRONIC gearbox for the S-Class Coupe.
Till now available for the E350 BlueTec sedan and estate, the nine-speed auto box brings improvements in fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions. Starting January 2015, clients who choose the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe will benefit of this 9G- TRONIC, too. The auto box will sent the 455 PS (335 kW) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) developed by the V8 4.7-liter engine to the rear axle.
The 9G-TRONIC gearbox is compatible with rear and all-wheel drives, together with plug-in hybrid or hybrid drive systems. It will eventually be available in most of the firm's models and engines in the upcoming years. External noise has been reduced by up to 4 dB thanks to the overall reduction in engine speed which has also improved comfort inside the cabin. The new gearbox has just about the same size as the previous seven-speed 7G-TRONIC despite the two additional gears. It's also lighter than its predecessor. The facelift Mercedes CLS lineup is also being prepared to take up this gearbox.
